Waiting as Infrastructure

This article treats waiting as a designed — or undesigned — part of the built environment rather than empty time between journeys. Drawing on field-timed waits and interviews at Lagos transit stops, we find that the physical setting of a wait, including shelter and visibility of arrival information, shapes its perceived cost independently of its duration, and argue that waiting infrastructure deserves the same design attention as roads and stations.
