The Cost of Waiting

Does waiting time affect perceived accessibility differently from travel time? Combining field-timed waits with matched-duration travel-diary pairs, we find that the predictability of a wait matters more than its length: unpredictable waits are rated far less acceptable than longer, predictable ones. We argue that transit accessibility measures should incorporate wait uncertainty, not only average wait duration.
