Mobility Beyond Distance

Distance is the default unit for measuring urban access, yet this paper finds that straight-line distance is a weak predictor of how accessible a destination feels once infrastructure and cost are considered. Using spatial and interview data from Lagos, the study shows that a shorter route can be a harder journey, and proposes an access measure that accounts for route quality rather than distance alone.
